History On the island of La Réunion, missionaries sent by the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy (Vallee de la Reunion) were unable to live on the island. In 1847 the parish priest of Saint Joseph offered to build a convent for the Ursulines, but did not have enough funds. After several years, the nuns were finally able to buy a piece of land. The Sisters began working in Saint-Denis-de-la-Réunion, Aéroport, Menera, Port-Saint-Louis, and Saint-Paul, before opening a school at the Port-Louis cathedral in 1852.
